This, too, is a tired argument. Of course it has intrinsic value; it's called "intellectual property." My example was meant to illustrate how ridiculous it is to expect Apple to just trust people to run out and buy a Mac just because they pirated OS X, as though you'd let people drive a Lamborghini on the honor system.

When you pirate digital information, you're still stealing indirectly by depriving the author of payment. In other words, you're stealing revenues owed to them, especially if you do it off a P2P network where your shared files are distributed to others and spread the piracy. Just because computers provide a method of perfect duplication of a product doesn't magically mean you have the right to freeload it and not pay someone for their work.

I'm so tired of these sorts of Slashdot-esque positions on piracy and intellectual property.

Whether or not the pictures are real, and of a real case, I'm sure they are. I spend a ton of time working in China developing other types of products. I take pictures (sometimes as crappy as these) every time I'm over here.

I don't hate the Mac App store, I just don't think it should be a factor in the award. With that said, its Apples award and they can do as they please with it, including making acceptance of onerous terms a prerequisite to compete.

Respectfully, I think you're missing the point. In its totality, installing an app is more like:

1) Google or otherwise search for an app. Make sure its the Mac version, compatible with your OS version, processor, etc. There probably won't be any reviews, more like select quotes from people who liked it.
2) IF you trust that website, fill out your credit card information, PayPal account, etc.
3) Download it and do the process you described for installing.
4) If you need to re-install the app, buy a new computer, etc. hope that the company allows you to re-download it.
5) If you have a good/bad experience, good luck reviewing it or rating it.

I'm a pretty tech-savvy guy and I still appreciate the ease of the Mac App Store.

I ordered mine on Monday and got it yesterday (ground shipping!). I just got off the phone with tech support (customer service had no clue about the change in specs). He actually had no clue either. He'd never heard of any color or pink cast problems, surprise surprise, and said that that kind of thing is just a matter of opinion. I said that bumping brightness to 400 cd/m2 (up from 270 cd/m2) and contrast ration to 700:1 (up from 400:1) isn't a matter of opinion, so they should have some way of confirming that I received what I paid for.

In any event, he did tell me that mine was manufactured in June (sn 2A6221XXXXX). I would hope and assume that this means it's the newer LCD. It looked great from my powerbook, and I'm looking forward to checking it out with my new Mac Pro when it arrives tomorrow.

SavorMar 17, 07:10 PMI don't have the same story or friends like you do, so no. In Los Angeles/Orange County, Apple Stores are abundant and within a 20 miles from each other it seems. I do have some people glance at my phone from time to time especially when I am at MetroPCS paying my dad's phone bill. LOL. I don't really care for the attention and keep it incognito most of the time next to my waist.

But your story doesn't surprise especially if you can come from the UK. iPhone did slip out of the TOP 5 in sales last year. I believe the HTC Desire was the most popular one. One of my favorite reviewers from the UK is James Whatley. He reminds me of Brandon Flowers from The Killers. He despises Apple with a passion. He works for Nokia now, so call him one of those diehard Nokians.

I think most of the hatred isn't at the iPhone at all but at Apple. No different than hating the Lakers or Yankees. It is too damn popular and people just end up getting sick of it altogether. Not everybody wants to follow the iSheep. People yearn for their own individuality and don't always want something everybody and their grandma has. Think different, remember? In a few years, people will get sick of Android and WP7 too once they start to decline in popularity. All cycles. There was a time when people laughed at Nintendo and are now hip for the casual masses. Every company has their ups and downs. I see the cell phone market similar to the video game market. You build a platform and try to see to sell it fast to attract software developers. Eventually, it declines and you either rest on your laurels for it to become played out or you take the next jump and hope it doesn't alienate your core audience. Sometimes it does just like it does for many popular rock bands. They change it up too much with their music that people can't accept the change anymore. Or you rest on your laurels and become what Nokia and RIM have been the last couple years.

By 2020, who knows if any of them will still exist or be the most popular OS out there? Every product line can die out eventually. And if they did still exist, it won't be how we see them now.

I don't think it's going to happen- the purpose of 10 billion in the bank for apple is having 10 billion in the bank. Apple's expertise is in taking big risks (at least large for a compnay of their size), a good number of which pay off very, very well. But people- investors, CEOs, are risk adverse, and a huge pile of cash to operate on, so big they can operate and continue to invest in risky and exciting products, mitigates their risks. For apple, a pile of money might actually be worth more than investing that money at a high rate of return.

Huge cash hordes are only good for three things, in order of desirability: reinvesting in future growth (which is why it's called capitalism); returning to the stockholders in the form of dividends; or holding for a rainy day. The last reason, which you seem to think is the best one, should be seen by investors as a signal that the company lacks confidence in the future.

Actually, there's a fourth use of excess cash: a stock buy-back. Apple isn't doing this with the money currently, either.

I agree, the huge stockpile of cash is an issue. That's money that should be working for Apple, and IMHO that should be in the form of purchasing other companies that will strengthen Apple in key areas, like music distribution and/or audio/video/graphics production.

And I also agree with you on the dividend issue. A small investment of that money into dividends may have the exact effect as you describe. On the other hand, putting that money into new products/enhancing existing products, may do more for Apple's long-term health vs. providing a dividend to improve the 'optics' of the company in shareholders' eyes.

New investments in technologies and products would be by far the best use of the money. With Apple's cash, they could set up a research arm similar to Xerox PARC or the old Bell Labs and place themselves in the forefront of new technology for a long time. Instead, they seem to be notably stingy with their R&D dollars. Purchasing technologies by buying out smaller companies could also be advantageous, and Apple does do some of this, but not much -- not enough to make even a dent in their cash hoard.

Realistically how often have you needed to go into regedit to alter the registry. At my company they restrict access to the registry and it has not impacted my users one bit.

I maintain about 30+ windows servers and while I have needed to go into the registry on occasion its a rarity. While I agree that the usage of the registry is a weak point for windows, its not as bad as some people make it out.

Apple has similar issues that need to be fixed from the terminal, like rebuilding the launchservices database.
